At UniPlace you will find a liturgical worship that reflects today’s concerns.
Pastor Kristine Light preaches with a reverence for how the divine inspires, engages and challenges us. Each week you will find yourself encouraged towards stewardship and motivated to reflect on God’s calling in your life. Our worship life is marked by exceptionally fine classical music, enhanced through the leadership of campus musicians, and our homegrown Jubilee musicians. Lively guitar, flute, and other wind instruments are often heard as we sing God’s praises.
We invite the moment of restoration in our busy schedules each week. Our hearts are moved through inspiring music, prayer and preaching which complement one another to deliver a message that directly connects the deep words of Scripture to our everyday lives.
Our congregation is built up of active community members.
With unique gifts educators, professionals, musicians, gardeners, entrepreneurs, students, artists, parents, and retired clergy come together to embody and engage our mission: to create a compassionate world through our love of Christ Jesus. Here you will find a community of faith that uplifts your personal gifts and provides opportunity to become involved yourself.
Are you passionate about serving those who may be food insecure, homeless, or experiencing poverty?
Are you a student at the University of Illinois who wants to meet other students passionate about serving their community?
Are you hoping to become a steward of the earth and more involved in efforts that benefit the environment?
Are you looking to develop your faith through bible-study in an inclusive community?
Are you eager to find new avenues to practice your faith and activism?
Are you a story-teller, artist, or musician?
Our faith directly influences the ways we engage with the world, each other, and ourselves. Keeping this in mind, our congregation makes space for faith development that embraces those parts of ourselves as we grow into more compassionate people of faith.
As a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we share the following practices and believes with our denomination.
Open Communion: The Lord’s Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who want to follow Jesus the Christ.
Freedom of belief: Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. All are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
Baptism by immersion: In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored and fully recognized.
Belief in the oneness of the church: All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
The ministry of all believers: Both ordained clergy and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth opportunities.
