It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the continuation of our Just Food internship at Uniplace, thanks to a wonderful grant from the National Benevolence Association (NBA).

Located on the edge of the University of Illinois Campus, we have a longstanding program called Community Dinner which provides free meals to approximately 100 folks each Wednesday night while U of I is in session (during fall and spring semesters). With the help of dozens of university students each week, we open our dining area to families experiencing food insecurity, homeless men and women, students, faculty, and workers from the university. The dinner is free for everyone, no questions asked.

This fall, we expanded our program to include paid internships for area high school students. The high school students are paid $10/hr (the university students are all volunteers) and assist our kitchen supervisor Jason Patton. Jason received a culinary degree from Parkland after serving as an intern in our kitchen and is in the midst of earning a degree from Eastern Illinois University. The high school student interns will gain food handler training and certification, enhance job readiness skills, kitchen management skills, and culinary knowledge.

The required working hours are Tuesday from 5:00pm-7:00pm and Wednesday’s from 4:00pm-8:00pm – a total of 6 hours per week. All students who successfully remain in the program for the full semester will receive a certificate of completion and positive references from our professional and kitchen staff.

This short-term paid internship opportunity, compensated above minimum wage, is intended to help a motivated young person take another step toward full employment readiness. Along the way, valuable nutrition, community building, advocacy, and food justice issues will be explored. Any help you can provide in sending interested students to us is deeply appreciated.
