Pentecost Sunday
|
|
|
Day of Pentecost. This is a special Sunday in the life of the greater church-it is Pentecost and we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the life of our church here at Uni Place, we will be witness to persons becoming disciples of Christ by confession and baptism. Through baptism we are brought into union with Christ, with one another and with the church of every time and place. What a wonderful way to celebrate the birthday of the Church!

Sunday, April 27 is the Sixth Sunday of Easter, and it also is the day the Orthodox Church celebrates Easter. We will be privileged to have the noted Bulgarian conductor, Miroslav Popsavov, as guest choir conductor for our worship service. Mr. Popsavov is one of the most distinguished European conductors in the sphere of Eastern Orthodox music. Our music director, Sergei Pavlov, studied under him. Mr. Popsavov graduated from the seminary and the Ecclesiastical Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, and completed his studies in choral conducting at the National Academy of Music in Bulgaria. Professor Popsavov is chair of the Conducting department at the National Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he teaches choral conducting and presides over a specialized course in the theory and history of ecclesiastical music. He is also music director of the Sofia Orthodox Choir with which he has made several recordings for Capriccio-EMI and Gega New. The combined Chancel Choir and Wesley United Methodist Church Choir will sing three selections during our worship service under the direction of Mr. Popsavov. There will be an informal reception in the parlor after worship for Mr. Popsavov and singers from Wesley. Please plan to stop by and greet them.

C.R.O.P Walk
|
|
|
The C. R. O. P. (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk 2008 is coming up Sunday April 13th. This year we will be walking 6.4 miles through southwest Champaign to raise money for the general mission fund of Church World Service and a quarter of the funds going toward local charities; The Times Center, The Eastern Illinois Food Bank and The Catholic Worker House. There will be shorter 3 mile routes for those without the endurance or patience and vans that drive around for those who have emergency problems.
Walkers will be meeting at 1:45 p.m. at the Sinai Temple at 3104 Windsor Rd. with the walk starting at 2:00 p.m. There are stops along the route at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at 604 W. Windsor Rd. and the Apostolic Christian Church, 1401 Devonshire Rd. If you can't walk please sponsor someone. Your dollars make a difference to those suffering from malnutrition, those who don't have access to clean water or those in need of shelter. This year our community has a goal of making $28,000 with 300 walkers and 25 groups. Lets do our part to support this effort.
Last year walkers raised about $1,700 while enjoying a walk from the Vineyard Church through downtown Urbana and part of Crystal Lake Park.Sign up to walk or agree to sponsor someone.

Holy Week Events

Palm Sunday - March 16, 10:00 a.m.
We welcome Rev. Linda Weber to the pulpit in Dr. Ewing's absence (he and several students will be in New Orleans on a mission trip over spring break week). The text for her sermon, "Today - and the Week Ahead" is Mark 11:1-10. This is the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem - riding on a colt, hearing the shouts of "Hosanna!" from the crowd. Join us as we start the final week of our journey to Easter.
Maundy Thursday - March 20, 6:30, 7:15 p.m.
Rev. Bernard Archer will lead us in this service as we remember Jesus' last supper with his disciples and his agony on the way to his death. A version of the fourteen Stations of the Cross will be read aloud, with time for personal silent meditation after each one. Let us prepare our hearts for the final days of the journey to Easter.
Easter Morning Breakfast - March 23, 9:00 a.m.
Share breakfast with church family and friends before our worship on this glorious day. All are invited - children and youth will attend Sunday School and adults will gather in Page Hall.
Easter Sunday worship - March 23, 10:00 a.m.
As Christians, we share the joy of our risen Lord on this Easter Morning! Dr. Ewing's sermon is entitled "Believe It Or Not!", and will be based on the story from Matthew's gospel, chapter 28, verses 1-10. The two Marys go to Jesus' tomb, see the angel who tells them not to be afraid, and meet Jesus on the way to tell the disciples. Each Christian shares the Christ on this Easter Morning. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
